  1. Hi Sam,
    Where should I start ...
Due to health issues we (my parents, my sister and I) completely changed our lifestyle. We cut out all sugar, switched over to whole grains, started to use coconut oil instead of (plastic) margarines, ... We're now having a completely organic diet for about 8 years and have never felt better!
I'm aware of the fact that aspartame is just as bad for you as sugar. But as long as it doesn't make you fat, people will eat it. I'm a graduate dietician (not proud of that) and have learned during my training to encourage the use of these sugar substitutes especially to people with obesity, diabetes or heart disease. That's just horrible! I didn't get it, but I graduated in silent and thought my own.
Anyway, I'm glad that there are people like you who share all this information of high value. Your blog (which I discovered just about one hour ago) is very informative and inspiring, and also very encouraging for me to no longer remain in silent. So thank you very much!
Excuse my rather confusing mind sharing, but I needed to get it out...
I followed (and I'm probably going to stalk you now, sorry!) :)
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

    1. Hi Sofie,

Thank you for your comments, I appreciate you taking your time to read the blog. Glad you have changed your life around for the better.
Diet can be a confusing subject at the best of times. I myself did a nutrition consultancy course about a year ago, I had to recommend people eat meat for protein, dairy for calcium, fish for omega-3 fatty acids which I totally disagree with, but you've got to do it to pass!
When you speak of cutting all sugar out does this mean you don't eat fruit? I don't like the craze in the mainstream at the moment that sugar is bad for you and can make you fat, it's annoying and untrue. Every cell in the human body runs on sugar, we cannot function without it. The low carbohydrate hype at the minute is killing people, since when did saturated fat become good for your heart and weight loss! I assume you're making reference to refined sugar and the toxic sweeteners like aspartame, etc?
My mission with this blog is to promote a whole foods, plant-based diet and try bring information forward to de-bunk many a myth in the health food world.
      Thank you for reading!

    2. Hi Sam,
Oh no, by cutting out all sugar, I mean the refined sugars and artificial sweeteners. I do eat carbohydrates, a lot, I couldn't live without! I just don't eat the sugary cookies, cakes and all that.
One other thing ... From your blog I can deduce that you don't support saturated fats like coconut oil, or am I wrong? I actually believe that we need fats for the construction of our cells. But I don't support the artificial margarines which they're always trying to cut down on fat. I also eat a lot of nuts and seeds, avocados, ... because they contain good fats (and because I just like them too much). You disagree? I also don't believe that eating good fats (not in excess, not McDonalds' fats etc.) will make you fat.
Sorry for all my comments lately, but I really appreciate the fact that you replied to my previous one! Thank you!

  2. Hi there Sofie,
I'm not a huge fan of oils no. I do believe in eating fats from whole food plant sources but not in excess. Fats are important like you say for construction of cells.
I stopped using oils (especially when cooking) after listening to the likes Caldwell Esselstyn, Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell, John McDougall, et al. These guy recommend a high carb (80% total cals) low fat (10% total cals) and have success in reversing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers on a plant based diet and avoiding all oils is a major factor in doing so. The reason being is that oils are 100% fat and are refined from their plant sources. For example coconut oil is around 92% saturated fat i believe. It's better to eat the coconut, not the coconut oil, or the olive before it gets extracted into the oil, etc. Watch the couple videos on my oil post for more info.
Avocadoes are a fruit so probably the best fat source in my opinion. I like to add hemp seeds to my smoothies every so often as well. I don't eat many nuts but when I do I try to soak them beforehand to reactivate the enzymes. I'm definately not anti-fat! If I'm eat out or whatever I know that oil will be used in cooking or salads but I don't stress about it at all, a little won't kill you!

Appriecate the questions, it's good to share ideas and knowledge.
